TESTING METHODS
Asbestos testing is conducted according to Australian Standard AS 4964, Method for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples. There are a number of testing methods to determine the presence of asbestos in your house, building, or structure. The most common of these methods are polarising light microscopy (PLM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
PLM is used for the determination of asbestos in bulk building materials and other samples such as soil and rock. Asbestos and other silicate minerals have crystal lattices that interact with the microscope’s light rays. This allows for the identification and existence of the substance in the tested sample material.
TEM, on the other hand, identifies the presence of asbestos fibres through their appearance, chemical composition, and crystal structure. TEM’s advantage over other methods is that it can analyse very fine fibres along with their chemical composition and crystal structure.
Other methods include x-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IRS).
